Nygaard farm was established by A.J. (Anders Jorgen) Nygaard at the turn of the twentieth century. A Danish immigrant who never saw his homeland again and traveled through Ellis Island on his way to the Dakotas, A.J. homesteaded in the center of Richland Township just north of the present farm site before moving to the Nygaard farm.
